Comments Is King

Hi All, you know what’s working well for my traffic recently??….comments, I passed this off before as pointless, but am now seeing how good it can be, and the thing is, im not doing it trying to find a “do follow” link from a high PR blog that Google will pick up on, oh no, i’m doing it because people “do follow”, and more people at my blog is what im trying to achieve.

If you read up on related blog posts in your area of expertise, or in my case, in your area of just jumping right into the deep end, then flapping your arms around until you eventually find a floaty;), but you get the drift?, but if you do read allot of blog post and never comment, why??.

Recently I’ve been reading posts and taking in all the information, then reading through some of the comments, then i’ll get to a really good comment, or a similar question to one that I have, and i’ll click on that persons link to find out more about them, then it hit me, because that person was at that very same blog, and submitted a very similar question to what I would have asked, it sparked my interest in finding out more about that person.

I think were so use to seeing the “great post…..here’s my link” short comments, that once we see a relevant comment that is meaningful to that topic, and also proves the reader actually read it just like us, it lets us know that we have something in common with them, almost like going to a bookstore and seeing someone pick up a magazine you always buy, one that you used to think nobody else was interested in but you.

If the blog is similar to yours, then this is also a great way to pick up new comments on your blog too, you see you get the people who just read and leave, then you get the people that ham the spam and don’t even read it, then you get the people who not only read the post, but then they leave a great addition to it, or even spike another conversation within those comments, this is pretty much why most of the top blogs get over 70 comments per post, if you take a look through the comments you will see some of them don’t really relate to the post itself, but they are in reply to another viewers comment, almost like a forum.

When I now post comments on blogs I make sure I have read through all of the post itself, then i’ll also read down all the comments at the same time, you can pick up some real nuggets of information from doing this, sometimes even better than the post itself, because what you have is allot of people in the same boat as you, trying to figure out that post in their own way, and once they do they comment on it and let you know what worked for them.

Just be yourself in your comments, if you write what you really feel, you might be surprised by the amount of traffic that comes to your own blog, and all from people wanting to find out more about you because of that comment, remember if they feel you both have something in common, they might want to take a look at what your doing, and you just made yourself a new friend and follower.

Now because this post is all about comments, you have to leave comments below, or im going to look as silly as donkey at a show jumping event!. :) .

  • Is the writing originated from yourself? It is well written, and you should not classify yourself as beginner any more : )
  • Thanks for the kind comments;), yes all this writing is from my own mind, which can be strange at times;))
  • Elliot - commenting certainly feels like a lost art sometimes.

Personally if the post is a well written and interesting one (like yours) then I always read the comments, because there's a good chance that because the article was so good that it will also draw out great comments from which I can learn even more.

    Cheers
    Patrick
  • Thats very true Patrick, if I find myself with a question about that post, 95% of the time someone has already asked it in the comments, so all I have to do is read the answer and apply whats been said.
  • You make a good case for comments there. Leaving comments is something I need to get into a habit of doing.

As you say, commenting is a nice free way of getting traffic, it can offer some useful information, and it can lead to an interesting exchange between people leaving and reading comments alike.

If you'd like to add more value for your commenters, consider adding commentluv and keywordluv plugins.

Lastly, your injection of wit into your writing is great. At least I think so anyway. Keep it up!
  • Well said comment bring you real readers. While you can bring traffic using auto and manual surf exchanges but you can get the readers that have genuine interest in your blog only by posting comments or advertising your site at forums or by linking to other blogs.
  • Thats true VInay, you may get 200 visits when someone diggs your content which is great, but they dont tend to stick around, the best way is to participate in other related blogs and find people interested in the same issues that your blog covers, these are the visitors you really want!.
  • It's true, often the real 'juice' in a post is in the comments. If you have a particularly active and interesting blog the comments will often add to the conversation. You can tell how engaging a blog and its author are by the number of comments. Of course, just a few comments might also be a sign of needing to improve traffic levels too.

Internet marketing is a big, confusing industry filled with hype-driven sales pithces. Occasionally you do find the gems; that great ebook or software that will change the way you make money online forever!

The difficult part is to brush aside the hype and find the ones that are really worth your time!
  • "Occasionally you do find the gems", any hints Sam??:))
