You know how some people think history is about as interesting as a fish tank without the fish?, or if you mention archives, they think your referring to some exotic herb?, you know people like that right?, me too, and to be honest sometimes we are all guilty of just the same kind of behavior, but you must have heard the saying “In order to move forward in the right direction for the future, you need to look into the past, by making sure you don’t make the same mistakes as before?”, ok maybe not, but history is a great tool for learning.
So history is a great learning tool?, especially for blogs it can be, the reason I had the idea for this post was actually thinking about why I started this blog, and that reason was so I would have a detailed journal about my progress with internet marketing and blogging, my thought was rather than write it down on paper, why not write it in a blog that I could go back over anytime, and so could others to see how, and where I came to a certain point, then it hit me, most of the blogs I read have huge archive’s available too!.
These archives are a huge mound of information for you to navigate your way through, and the reason you might want to do that is because they hold the progress of some of the top bloggers online, for example I love reading ProBlogger.net, this is a hugely popular blog with comments to many posts over 100!!, but if you take a look at the archives, you can get posts back as far as Sept 2004, now these are very early posts, so old in fact comments to these blog posts are mostly under 10, still more than mine;).
Now What To Do?.
But what can you do with this information?, you can study the posts to basically watch how that blogger became more and more popular, post by post, you can track what boosted comments, what topics failed, or just the general writing topics the blogger was using at that time, they may even give you ideas on what worked for them at that time.
You can basically travel back through time with that blog, then trace your way back to the present time with a much greater understanding of how that blog got so popular, now I know their are lots of other circumstances involved that make a blog huge, but at least you can get a detailed glimpse at some of the processes taking place behind the blogs growth.
How can you bring this information to your own blog?, by basically learning what paths have been the most successful for others, you now have ideas of post topics that work and fail, positive changes that work, and you could even find out what tactics they used to gain a huge following of visitors, maybe they created their own product?.
Now loaded with all this new(old) info, at least the minimum you may get out of it, is a renewed appreciation of a blog you love a read on a daily basis, what can be better than that?:).
Oh, last thing, if you get a chance please subscribe to this blog in the box in the top right corner, now that would be great!!:)).
